Repair or replace: reading a bumper after a parking-lot hit
The bumper cover is the painted plastic skin you see. Behind it sit impact absorbers, a metal reinforcement bar and the brackets that hold it all to the car. Scuffs and shallow gouges in the cover are usually repairable. Cracks, torn mounting tabs and covers that have lost their shape tend to tip toward replacement.
The decision turns on what is behind the cover as much as on the cover itself. That is why we look at the whole bumper assembly in person before we say repair or replace. Bring it to 4737 Nicollet Ave in Minneapolis and the estimate is free, with no obligation.
