When paintless repair works and when it does not
Paintless dent repair is the right call when the metal has been pushed in but the paint has not been broken. Hail, shopping cart dings and door-edge dents often leave a shallow, rounded dent under a finish that is still whole. Because the factory paint is intact, it can stay exactly as it left the factory, which is the point of the method: no sanding, no filler, no repaint, and no colour to match.
It does not fit every dent. Where the paint has cracked or chipped, where the metal has been stretched into a sharp crease, or where the damage sits on a panel edge with no way in behind it, the panel needs conventional body repair and refinish. A good estimate tells you which side of that line your car is on, and does not sell paintless work to a panel that needs paint.
At New Central Auto Body the first look decides it. Bring the car to 4737 Nicollet Ave in Minneapolis and we will tell you whether it can be worked paintless or needs the full repair.
Working the dent out from behind the panel
Paintless repair is done from the back of the panel. The technician gets tools behind the dent, through a gap in the structure or after trim and lining are moved aside, and slowly pushes the metal back toward its original shape in many small steps. Reading the reflections across the panel shows where the metal is still high or low, so the work is checked as it goes rather than guessed at.
Because the finish is never sanded, the car keeps its original paint and the gloss that goes with it. That is why our description of this work is a repair that preserves your factory finish without repainting.
The same approach covers dent and light scratch removal. A light scratch that has not gone through the paint can often be dealt with without a respray, while a deep one that has reached the metal needs the paint department. Tell us what you have and we will look at it with you, no obligation.
Hail claims, and getting the car checked before rust starts
Hail damage is easy to underestimate. Dents spread across the roof, hood and trunk lid can be shallow enough to miss in poor light, and a panel full of them takes serious time to work properly. Minnesota hail seasons leave plenty of cars like that, and the sooner a panel is looked at, the better, because a dent that has broken the paint can let moisture reach bare metal and start rust.
If the damage is covered, we work with all insurance companies and handle the claim process directly with your insurer, including estimates, approvals and paperwork. You also have the legal right in Minnesota to choose your own repair shop, whatever your insurer recommends.
